Hybrid Cars - All the Hype (continued)
Production runs for hybrid vehicles are small, selling only a few thousand per year. That makes parts hard to
find through competing aftermarket manufacturers and junkyards. Rare parts mean expensive maintenance. And if
hybrid standards change, manufacturers will certainly minimize production of obsolete parts.
There is already concern about the Honda Insight because the prices of the cars and parts are currently
subsidized by Honda. This subsidy will be abandoned when the design is obsolete, making it hard for older
Insight owners to cost effectively repair their cars.
Expensive parts equal stolen parts. When airbags first came out and were commanding prices of a thousand bucks,
an amazing number of used ones came from stolen cars. Not surprising if you consider that air bags were worth
more than the stereo and easier to remove. I'll bet that the custom shaped electric battery for hybrid cars will
be hot items in the black market with their new cost in the thousands.
Hybrids have too many unknown cost relative to the benefits of great gas mileage. If you have to buy new, I'd
suggest going for the VW diesels (Golf, Jetta or Beetle). These engines have been around forever and have
great gas mileage and lower greenhouse gas emissions that most cars. Even better than a new VW would be an
older model VW diesel. Let someone else take all that depreciation!
