4 Secrets About Windshield Saftey
There are a few simple steps during a windshield installation which can make the difference between a safe
installation and a poor one. They hardly cost anything to do, yet are often forgotten.
(1) Clean the glass. Simple, but deadly if not done. Before the windshield makes it to your car, it has been
through a manufacturing plant, a few warehouses and delivery trucks. Dust and dirt from pollutants in the air,
not to mention oils from human hands, need to be removed from the bonding surface. This ensures the strongest bond
to the urethane.
(2) Prepare the pinchweld. This is the metal surface on your car that the windshield bonds to. The
pinchweld must be clean, level, and free of rust and scratches. We use an Essex U-418 primer to protect
scratches and slow down precarious rust problems from previous poor installations.
(3) Use gloves to avoid contamination. Powder free nitril gloves can be used to avoid transferring natural
oils on hands to the glass edge when setting the windshield. A suction cup devise used to carry the
windshield can also help keep hands off the bonding edge.
(4) Match the setting height of the windshield. When your windshield is replaced, some shops "stack" new
urethane on top of old. Stacking leaves the windshield higher in the pinchweld bed then it is supposed to
be. This imbalance lessens the structural integrity of the car. It also can cause excessive air resistance, and
thus noise, as the wind moves over the uneven edges between glass and body.
